San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende was founded in 1542 by Juan de San Miguel, a Franciscan priest, in a place formerly occupied by the Chichimec indians. In colonial times, the city was a strategic place in the route to Mexico and other large mining cities in the area know as “el bajío” (Guanajuato and Zacatecas).
The city, considered a historic monument, still has a colonial atmosphere, with its narrow cobbled streets and yellow, red and brown houses. There is a large American community living in San Miguel de Allende and many artist and writers are attracted to this town.
The old downtown houses give the city a unique atmosphere of peace and tranquility, only interrupted by the various shops selling crafts, the luxurious lofts, the charming hotels, restaurants and art galleries that enrich and enliven this beautiful city.
